The Best Kept Secret: Michael's Surprise Party 1.17.09

Back in November Isis, Michael's wife, contacted me to help her create a memorable surprise party for her husband's 50th Birthday. Isis was very excited and had been looking forward to planning this party for a while. When I met her, she told me 2 things: It had to be a Rock and Roll themed party and it had to include Michael's favorite rock star, Bruce Springsteen. So I brainstormed for a couple of days, met with her, and presented her with my ideas. Thankfully she agreed with my vision. Since we did not have much time considering the fact that the holidays were around the corner, she was leaving on a trip to New York, and she couldn't talk to me when her husband was around (they work together), I am happy to say that we managed to pull it off!

Below are some pictures of Michael’s Birthday that were shot by none other than Alina M from Alina M Photography.

The Color scheme was Black and White with Blue Accents. We created an inviting environment using lounge furniture and cocktail tables.

Guests were treated to CD's consisting of some of Michael's favorite Bruce Springsteen's songs. The album cover, as well as the sign in poster, featured a replica of an old Bruce Springsteen Greatest Hits CD cover.

Guests were also treated to Michael's favorite tequila, Patron. The luge also reflected the theme and was Michael's favorite spot of the night.

The cake, which was a replica of one of Bruce Springsteen’s guitars, was done by Rosie from Elegant Temptations. She even replicated a 1985 Springsteen concert ticket Michael had stored in his safe.

Michael, Isis, and their guests, partied the night away to music provided by Infinity Sound Productions and Pangea, a live band.

Isis: WE DID IT!!!! I had an amazing time planning this party but most importantly I am glad I have made a new friend. I can't wait to begin planning Karina's 15's. Remember I am always here if you ever need anything. Have fun in Europe and enjoy your much needed vacation.

To the team of vendors: Great Job! Anna, it was great working with you and I hope this will be the first of many events at the Intercontinental. Dorian, the band was amazing and was exactly what we were looking for. Frank, Awesome job! I heard you outdid yourself at the after party...l0l

Couple #1 Courtney & Joshua

Wedding Location - Fort Lauderdale, Florida (Embassy Suites)
Wedding Date - May 1, 2010

How we met is the classic boy meets girl at fraternity house story. We met. We danced. We laughed. And we quickly fell in love at the ripe ages of 19 and 20. (bride and groom, respectively). We dated for three years in college at the University of Central Florida. As the days of college came to an end, Courtney made the hard decision to move back home to Philadelphia. Thus began the fun of a long distance relationship. While logging many phone hours, email hours and frequent flyer miles, the idea of moving was always floating back and forth between the two. Through a lot of tears, a lot of winded talks and a million sleepless nights, Josh made the move to Philadelphia in September 2007 after 5 years of dating. This was a huge. Josh grew up his entire life in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was a mama's boy to the fullest (in the most adorable way possible!), and hadn't quite found his niche in the job market. Luckily Courtney's family was huge and obnoxious and accepted him immediately as one of their own. Josh found his dream job at an advertising consulting firm and has never been so successful, career wise. In January 2008, Josh asked Courtney's parent's permission to marry their daughter. Courtney was ecstatic - unfortunately Josh didn't realize this tradition usually occurs days before the proposal. After a long, long, 11 months - Josh secretly purchased the most beautiful ring for Courtney. In the midst of everything, Courtney & Josh bought their first home - a beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath townhouse in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The house buying purchase occupied Courtney's mind so much she had nearly stopped wondering when Josh would propose. After they made settlement, Josh insisted they visit their new home for the first time. While fumbling for the keys, Josh got down on one knee and asked Courtney the ultimate questions - would she be his wife? She screamed and cried and twirled. Josh picked up Courtney and carried her into their brand new home. It was the perfect proposal. Courtney's had dreamed of her wedding for years upon years... the thought of actually planning is the best possible thing to happen!!! Our wedding will be a huge display of everything we love about each other. We are inviting a huge group of friends and family to watch us join our lives together. Courtney dreams of a classic, elegant and lovely Saturday night affair. Josh's one requirement is live music - unfortunately bands are out of our price range - so instead, Courtney is surprising Josh by hiring live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour. We are unique as a couple because we've overcome it all - the typical and atypical obstacles that any relationship goes through - and we've stuck by each other's side through it all. We love each other with everything we know - we are each other's best friends. We are real and we are silly and we can't way to start the next chapter as husband and wife. We would love to be chosen because Courtney wants her wedding weekend to be perfect for all. A day-of-coordinator would help her day flow flawlessly, and due to money restraints, she may not be able to hire a DOC otherwise. We would love someone to help with all the little steps and make our wedding day the perfect celebration.

Couple #2 Jamie & Mike

Wedding Location: Fort LauderdaleWedding
Wedding Date: TBD (2009 - early 2010)

I would love to win an engagement session this holiday season! To tell our story would take quite awhile as we have been together for 7 years! I think it will be best to tell you how we fell in love and how he proposed.

Mike and I met when we both worked at the same restaurant, we were both in other relationships, so we were pretty much work buddies. When
we both became single we started hanging out more and quickly became a couple. Our first Valentines day together was approaching and I knew he had a surprise in store for me. After asking my Mother's permission( I lived at home) to keep me overnight (how cute!) he whisked me off in a rented convertible where I was given roses and chocolates. A short drive later we wound up in Islamorada - I thought the getaway itself was the surprise but no - there was more. Mike blindfolded me and we drove awhile until we ended up at the DOLPHIN COVE...to swim with the dolphins!! Mike had only heard me mention once how badly I wanted to go and set the whole thing up for me. This is the trip where I knew I would love him forever. I have always regarded this as "our best date ever". He has tried over the years to outdo this date but really, who can compete with a dolphin?

Because we have been together so long we decided to do a light Christmas exchange this year and opted to take a trip to our beloved Islamorada for a little R&R instead of giving gifts to each other. While down there Mike mentioned going to see a mutual friend who had become a trainer at Theater of the Seas. I was thrilled! We wake up bright and early Saturday morning and arrive just in time to catch the dolphin show. At the end of the dolphin show Mike and I get picked to go on stage and give the dolphin a kiss (I almost peed my pants with excitement!) Of course, I am the last to get my dolphin kiss and imagine my surprise when the dolphin pops up with no kiss but a giant ring around his nose...I take the ring off and open the attached bottle to find a note inside that reads "say yes!". At this point, I turn around to find Mike on one knee asking me to be his wife. I felt what can never be described at that moment. After it was said and done I discovered there was a professional photographer nearby who captured every moment for us ( Mike really thought out the details!)

I would love to win this engagement session to honor the man I want to marry. This man who takes time to make the most magical proposal, thinks to capture all the memories and truly personifies gentleman qualities. From every door he's ever held to his everyday thoughtfulness to the people around him. I am truly a lucky bride.

Couple #3 Audra & Jonathan

Wedding Location: The Pelican Grand Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale
Wedding Date: May 9, 2009

How We Met:
We met my freshman year of college, the weekend before classes began. We both started working at the KSU Rec Center at the same time, so we went through orientation together. Over four years of college, our friendship grew into one that I cherished. Every time I knew he was working with me, I knew it would be a good day. He is the funniest person I have ever met, and we had random conversations about everything and anything. It allowed us to get to know each other for exactly who we were. I never had to pretend with Jon. I could show up in gross workout clothes without showering and not worry about what he was thinking. It wasn't until the end of senior year of college that we began realizing how similar we truly were. Our friendly conversations began developing. We talked about what we wanted out of life, what was important to us now and in the future, and how "all the little things" truly mattered. I remember wishing on a shooting star one night that I would find someone as perfect as Jon. Then, out of nowhere, I realized that the "perfect" person I was looking for was right in front of me. He also seemed to understand me in a way that only a very select circle of friends and family have ever been able to. After months and months and endless non-talks about the "elephant in the room" we nervously admitted our feelings for each other. And even though we had known each other for years, our first kiss (and every one since then) has given me butterflies. It was from that moment on that I knew this man, my work buddy and my friend, was "The One" :)

Our Engagement:
Anyone that knows me at all knows that I always count down the days leading up to my birthday. Jon knows this better than anyone and has always tried to make my birthday extra special. Well, my 24th birthday, May 10, 2008 was particularly special because I was also graduating from KSU with my Masters degree. After the ceremony, we got back to his apartment and he informed me that we were on a time schedule for the rest of the day. At 2:00, we left for our favorite sushi restaurant. When we got back, he instructed me to dress up and be ready to leave by 5:45pm. At 6:15, we arrived at Stan Hywet Hall-a historic landmark and museum in Akron, Ohio. He said he thought it would be nice to walk around the gardens since it was such a nice day. When we pulled in, I noticed there was a large white tent set up and figured someone must be having their wedding reception that night. We started walking along the paths, enjoying the perfect weather and beautiful surroundings. I could tell Jon had done his research, because he knew his way around and knew random facts about the different gardens we walked through. After awhile, we got to an area called The English Gardens. It was like something from the pages of a storybook-absolutely stunning. When we approached a bench, I found a big white box with a bow. Jon said "Happy Birthday, sweetheart" and led me over to it. When I lifted the lid to the box, I found a bottle of wine lying inside. I immediately started crying once I recognized the label: Brunello di Montalcino, a special Italian wine we agreed to save for our engagement night. Thus, when I saw the bottle, I knew what night this was. Jon poured us two glasses and told me to sit down. He told me how happy I make him, that I was the most beautiful person he has ever known, and that I was his best friend-I was crying like a baby at this point. Then he got down on his knee and asked if I would do him the honor of spending the rest of my life with him. I think I nodded, but after we hugged, he asked what my answer was because apparently nodding like an idiot doesn't always mean yes. So I screamed "Yes!" He then placed the most incredible diamond ring I have ever seen on my finger :) After finishing the wine, we made our way back toward the front of the mansion. As we got closer to the entrance, I noticed Jon was walking us toward the white tent when I heard music playing. It took me a few seconds to realize that the song that was playing was OUR song (“Look After You” by The Fray). Inside the tent, there were flowers and candles everywhere, with a table of food and a cake that said “Happy Birthday and Congratulations Audra” Jon then said “It’s 7:17,” which was the minute that I was born. (Every year a member of my family calls me at this exact time, it's kind of a tradition). With our song playing in the background, and all of the emotion surrounding what had just happened, he told me to go into the room connected to tent. Inside, I found all of our family and friends there!!! It was incredible to share such an important moment with all of the people we love. I still can't believe all the planning and coordination that my future husband did to make this birthday one that I will never forget. He had been planning everything down to perfect detail for a long, long time, and I had NO idea! No one has ever been able to make me feel as truly special and loved as Jon did that day. And now, when I look down at my finger, I relive every moment from that amazing night :)

Details of the wedding:
We currently live in Ohio, so we are having a destination wedding for sure! In fact 53 out of 57 guests invited to the wedding do not live in Florida at all! It is going to be a small, intimate and romantic affair. The overall look I’m going for is simple romantic elegance. We aren’t having bridesmaids or groomsmen because we are only inviting the people that are closest to us in the world, and we therefore couldn’t pick! (My niece and nephew will serve as the FG and RB however-can’t leave those cuties out!) Our ceremony will be on the beach. We are having a solo acoustic guitarist play the ceremony music. I’ll be wearing an ivory Pronovias gown with a silk flower and veil in my hair. Jon will be wearing a gray suit. We are going to have a thick layer of ivory and pale pink rose petals outlining the “aisle” that I’ll be walking down. I’ll be carrying a bouquet of calla lilies, pale pink roses, and ivory stephanotis. Jon’s parents are making us a canopy made of bamboo and ivory cloth draped over it. Our cocktail hour will be on the south side rooftop terrace of the resort. We’re having butler-passed hors d’ouevres, with cocktail napkins with our monogram and wedding date on them. Dinner will be on the north side rooftop terrace. Our centerpieces are simple calla lilies in a vase. Our place cards will be stuck into wine corks (as a reference to our engagement). We’re also going to have a digital guestbook, where our guests will write a message on a chalkboard and take a picture of themselves with the board with a nearby digital camera. Our reception will be on the patio veranda of the resort (we like to keep them moving!) We’re going to have ivory paper lanterns outlining the dance area, and will have sparklers for our big exit.

Why we should be chosen:
I am marrying my best friend. Regardless of how the wedding turns out, he will be my husband at the end of the day. What could be better than that? But because worrying is just part of my nature as a woman, I am pretty nervous about things are going to turn out. We are planning the entire wedding from Ohio. We were only able to afford to come to Florida once during our planning process, and the only vendor we met with was our reception venue. Thus, I have had to place a lot of faith on vendor reviews and the overall “feel” I get from talking to people about their services. I have never met our officiant, my hair stylist, our DJ or wedding musician, our baker, or our photographer, and we will not meet them until the day of the wedding. That fact right there scares a lot of people into not having a destination wedding. But it is just the essence of who Jon and I are as a couple. We have the utmost faith and adoration in each other, and we know that we will be happy regardless of the outcome of that big day. And the thought of saying our vows on the beach (where we had our first kiss) was something we couldn’t pass up. But wouldn’t it be nice to have someone there by side that day to help keep me calm and collected as I agree to spend the rest of my life with a truly amazing human being?

Couple #4 Tahra & Raymond

Wedding Location: Double Tree Grand
Wedding Date: March 20, 2009

I have been in love with Raymond since I was 3 years old! We knew each other through family and I would get to see him once or twice a year. He didn't know it, but I was crushing on him for about 20 years! We talked on the phone a little and I even hooked him up with one of my best friends because I never thought he would be interested in me, and they dated for about 4 months.

One day my mom invited us both to dinner at her house. I remember that I was supposed to work that night and I called my boss and told him I was super sick and couldn't come in (I had NEVER don't that before), but I hadn't seen Raymond in a few years and really wanted to catch up...and check him out! :o) So by the end of the night, we exchanged numbers. I called him the next day and we talked on the phone for about 3 hours, still never confessing our true feelings. I invited him out to my favorite spot on a Wednesday night and he came and by the end of the night, the truth came out and the feelings were mutual!! I was in a state of shock for about a month!

The day he proposed was by far one of the best days of my life so far!! We love going to the Bob Marley Festival in Miami each year and this year was no different. Raymond insisted that we get there as soon as the gates opened and I was kind of annoyed that we would have to be in the hot sun all day, but I went along with it. A short while after we got there, I noticed that many of my cousins and friends were there and I thought it was just a coincidence since we all like the same music. I saw Raymond talking to the MC of the festival and when I asked him about it he was saying that he was trying to get us backstage passes. About an hour or two later, Keeven (the MC) calls us up to the stage and lets us watch the performers from backstage. After the performance was over, he calls Raymond up to the front of the stage and he drags me along with him. At this point my friends and family are going nuts and screaming their heads off and I realize that it was all a set up!! Raymond said a little speech into the microphone and then proposed -ON STAGE- in front of thousands of people!!! Right after, we were interviewed by a local Jamaican TV station and I just couldn't believe what had just happened. People were congratulating us all night long and I was just floating on air. My ring was 10 times more beautiful than the one I had picked out and he also had it engraved with "One Love". You can see the proposal on YouTube by searching for "Proposal at Marley Fest 2008" or by following this link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR-zWTmaHS0

We were engaged on March 1, 2008 and the wedding is set for March 20, 2009 which is the first day of spring. We are having a traditional, formal wedding in Miami. Our guest list is about 125 at the moment and we are paying for the entire wedding ourselves!! I am a second grade teacher and he goes to school full time and works full time as the manager of an ink company. Raymond has never even been to a wedding before and I know he is going to have a great time! Our colors are fuchsia and cornflower and the decor will include lots of "bling" and accents of butterflies to incorporate the feeling of spring. We hired a DJ and expect to be shaking our groove thangs all night long to all types of island music. My family is from Haiti and Raymond is half Dominican and half Jamaican, so I'm sure there will be no shortage of dancing...and drinking!

We are unique as a couple because of our long history. It's nice to know someone for so long who can share in some childhood memories and fit in so well with my family. We have really good communication with each other and people are always commenting on how good we are together. We truly enjoy each other's company, but have also kept our own friends and have social lives outside of our relationship. It's nice to have so much trust in someone and know that they trust you too.

We should be chosen as the winners because we are hard workers, we believe in the power of karma (what does around comes around) and lead our lives as honest and good-intended as possible, we both have waited so long to find the perfect person to spend our lives with and just want our day to be as stress-free as possible. We are paying for this entire wedding ourselves in addition to our honeymoon in Jamaica, but as of now it doesn't look like we will be able to afford the honeymoon. We are keeping positive about it and hopefully it will all work out!! We hope you enjoyed reading our story!!!

Couple #5 Arlete & Carlos

Wedding Location: Westin Colonnade, Coral Gables
Wedding Date: 12/27/09

arlos and I met at work; we were both working in an Elementary School’s after care program. We were working together since the fall of 2002, but I was 'unavailable' and so was he….Spring of 2003 came along, and since we were both single, we began to mingle. It was during my little sister’s prom where we began to bond. We hung out at the beach for hours and hours…next thing we knew, the sun was out! We had spent the ENTIRE night together! I had never done this before, and was shocked at myself. It turns out that since I had disappeared the whole night with some guy, my sister and friends were worried to death! They later found out what I was up to…I was on the longest date ever. After that, were inseparable.I knew I was in love after several months of being with someone who truly was interested in my thoughts, opinions, and happiness. I felt respected, honored, and safe. I knew he was it for me and I was it for him…we declared our love during the most appropriate of all events: Art and Design, during the December 2003 Art Basel.Throughout our relationship we have been in school, stressing through finals, helping each other on projects, living the frugal college life. Through undergrad and graduate school we have supported each other and have grown as a couple…In the beginning of our relationship Carlos didn’t believe in marriage; eventually after seeing how happy we were, he changed his mind…and finally on our 5th year anniversary Carlos proposed.Days before the proposal he went ring shopping with my sister and asked my dad for permission. On the day of our 5th year anniversary, Carlos took me to a picnic in the beach (where we had first hung out) and while I was stuffing my face with an Italian wrap, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course the first thing I said was “get the F#$k out! Oh my God, Oh my God…then I composed myself and said “yes”. When we got home my parents cried, popped a bottle of champagne and celebrated with us.Of course my wedding is something I had thought about many, many, many times. Since I’m Peruvian and most of my family is there, I am having two weddings. Yes, two weddings. I consulted with Carlos and he agreed. We would have the civil ceremony in Miami and the Religious ceremony in Peru. Coming up with our color scheme was easy: black, white, greys, and silvers. We’re envisioning a classic, slight vintage look, lots of white flowers, and nice touches of black and grey. When looking for the ceremony/reception sites, we went to the Westin Colonnade as our first choice. The moment we visited the site, we knew it was it. I’m the first great granddaughter, granddaughter, daughter, cousin and sister in both sides of my family to be married! I feel some pressure in breaking the ice and I’m going to need lots of help! On top of it all I need to plan this twice! Carlos and I are saving for a home, I’m looking for a job, and we are planning two weddings. Hiring a day of coordinator is something that would help us out immensely!
