Wedding Location: Westin Colonnade, Coral Gables
Wedding Date: 12/27/09
arlos and I met at work; we were both working in an Elementary School’s after care program. We were working together since the fall of 2002, but I was 'unavailable' and so was he….Spring of 2003 came along, and since we were both single, we began to mingle. It was during my little sister’s prom where we began to bond. We hung out at the beach for hours and hours…next thing we knew, the sun was out! We had spent the ENTIRE night together! I had never done this before, and was shocked at myself. It turns out that since I had disappeared the whole night with some guy, my sister and friends were worried to death! They later found out what I was up to…I was on the longest date ever. After that, were inseparable.I knew I was in love after several months of being with someone who truly was interested in my thoughts, opinions, and happiness. I felt respected, honored, and safe. I knew he was it for me and I was it for him…we declared our love during the most appropriate of all events: Art and Design, during the December 2003 Art Basel.Throughout our relationship we have been in school, stressing through finals, helping each other on projects, living the frugal college life. Through undergrad and graduate school we have supported each other and have grown as a couple…In the beginning of our relationship Carlos didn’t believe in marriage; eventually after seeing how happy we were, he changed his mind…and finally on our 5th year anniversary Carlos proposed.Days before the proposal he went ring shopping with my sister and asked my dad for permission. On the day of our 5th year anniversary, Carlos took me to a picnic in the beach (where we had first hung out) and while I was stuffing my face with an Italian wrap, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course the first thing I said was “get the F#$k out! Oh my God, Oh my God…then I composed myself and said “yes”. When we got home my parents cried, popped a bottle of champagne and celebrated with us.Of course my wedding is something I had thought about many, many, many times. Since I’m Peruvian and most of my family is there, I am having two weddings. Yes, two weddings. I consulted with Carlos and he agreed. We would have the civil ceremony in Miami and the Religious ceremony in Peru. Coming up with our color scheme was easy: black, white, greys, and silvers. We’re envisioning a classic, slight vintage look, lots of white flowers, and nice touches of black and grey. When looking for the ceremony/reception sites, we went to the Westin Colonnade as our first choice. The moment we visited the site, we knew it was it. I’m the first great granddaughter, granddaughter, daughter, cousin and sister in both sides of my family to be married! I feel some pressure in breaking the ice and I’m going to need lots of help! On top of it all I need to plan this twice! Carlos and I are saving for a home, I’m looking for a job, and we are planning two weddings. Hiring a day of coordinator is something that would help us out immensely!
