Wedding Location: Double Tree Grand
Wedding Date: March 20, 2009
I have been in love with Raymond since I was 3 years old! We knew each other through family and I would get to see him once or twice a year. He didn't know it, but I was crushing on him for about 20 years! We talked on the phone a little and I even hooked him up with one of my best friends because I never thought he would be interested in me, and they dated for about 4 months.
One day my mom invited us both to dinner at her house. I remember that I was supposed to work that night and I called my boss and told him I was super sick and couldn't come in (I had NEVER don't that before), but I hadn't seen Raymond in a few years and really wanted to catch up...and check him out! :o) So by the end of the night, we exchanged numbers. I called him the next day and we talked on the phone for about 3 hours, still never confessing our true feelings. I invited him out to my favorite spot on a Wednesday night and he came and by the end of the night, the truth came out and the feelings were mutual!! I was in a state of shock for about a month!
The day he proposed was by far one of the best days of my life so far!! We love going to the Bob Marley Festival in Miami each year and this year was no different. Raymond insisted that we get there as soon as the gates opened and I was kind of annoyed that we would have to be in the hot sun all day, but I went along with it. A short while after we got there, I noticed that many of my cousins and friends were there and I thought it was just a coincidence since we all like the same music. I saw Raymond talking to the MC of the festival and when I asked him about it he was saying that he was trying to get us backstage passes. About an hour or two later, Keeven (the MC) calls us up to the stage and lets us watch the performers from backstage. After the performance was over, he calls Raymond up to the front of the stage and he drags me along with him. At this point my friends and family are going nuts and screaming their heads off and I realize that it was all a set up!! Raymond said a little speech into the microphone and then proposed -ON STAGE- in front of thousands of people!!! Right after, we were interviewed by a local Jamaican TV station and I just couldn't believe what had just happened. People were congratulating us all night long and I was just floating on air. My ring was 10 times more beautiful than the one I had picked out and he also had it engraved with "One Love". We were engaged on March 1, 2008 and the wedding is set for March 20, 2009 which is the first day of spring. We are having a traditional, formal wedding in Miami. Our guest list is about 125 at the moment and we are paying for the entire wedding ourselves!! I am a second grade teacher and he goes to school full time and works full time as the manager of an ink company. Raymond has never even been to a wedding before and I know he is going to have a great time! Our colors are fuchsia and cornflower and the decor will include lots of "bling" and accents of butterflies to incorporate the feeling of spring. We hired a DJ and expect to be shaking our groove thangs all night long to all types of island music. My family is from Haiti and Raymond is half Dominican and half Jamaican, so I'm sure there will be no shortage of dancing...and drinking!
We are unique as a couple because of our long history. It's nice to know someone for so long who can share in some childhood memories and fit in so well with my family. We have really good communication with each other and people are always commenting on how good we are together. We truly enjoy each other's company, but have also kept our own friends and have social lives outside of our relationship. It's nice to have so much trust in someone and know that they trust you too.
We should be chosen as the winners because we are hard workers, we believe in the power of karma (what does around comes around) and lead our lives as honest and good-intended as possible, we both have waited so long to find the perfect person to spend our lives with and just want our day to be as stress-free as possible. We are paying for this entire wedding ourselves in addition to our honeymoon in Jamaica, but as of now it doesn't look like we will be able to afford the honeymoon. We are keeping positive about it and hopefully it will all work out!! We hope you enjoyed reading our story!!!
